George Shaw Cook is a native of Iowa. When a child he moved with his parents to Chicago, Illinois, and was educated in the Chicago public schools. After leaving high school he entered the commercial world, and later became one of the partners of a firm dealing in investment securities.

Mr. Cook became a student of Christian Science in 1895, and in 1896 had class instruction. In 1896 Mr. Cook united with First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago, Illinois, and in 1897, with The Mother Church. He served as a member of the official board of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago.

When Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago, was organized in January, 1903, Mr. Cook was a charter member thereof, and served that church as First Reader from 1903 to 1906. During that time he left the business world to become a Christian Science practitioner.
