Twenty years ago I contracted tuberculosis, which was believed to be hereditary in my family. Two other young men similarly afflicted and I found a cabin at an altitude of nearly nine thousand feet in Colorado, and moved there, hoping to be benefited. For a while I improved, then began losing strength and weight rapidly, and to mortal sense was suffering greatly.

A young neighbor, also ill, and I drove down to Colorado Springs for physical examination. On returning to the cabin we found that the other men and our cook were not at home. As we sat by the dying embers of the huge fireplace, tired and discouraged, a magazine that had been sent me by mail attracted my attention. It proved to be a Christian Science Sentinel. I opened it at a testimony of healing of tuberculosis—verily the way of God passeth understanding. After reading it I said to my companion, "Here is the testimony of a man who was healed of tuberculosis through Christian Science." Then I read the testimony to him, and said: "My doctor told me today that from his examination I have about six weeks to live, that the disease is starting in my spine, and that I should move to Colorado Springs because the trips are too exhausting for me and his treatments are not helping me. This is Wednesday. We should have remained in Colorado Springs and gone to the Christian Science church tonight. I have heard they give testimonies of healings at their meetings."

"Why not go back?" my companion suggested. "I had an aunt who was cured by Christian Science, and I've always believed there was something in it." So we started back. As we silently drove down the trail I prayed to God. I wanted the truth. I felt I had the right to ask God to tell me whether I was doing the right thing in going to this church in search of Truth. Instantly, as though spoken to me, came these words: "The truth is found in Christian Science." I repeated the words aloud, and my companion said, "Yes, I know, that is the reason we are going down to church."
