The Model

[Written Especially for Young People]

[Original article in German]

THE school board in a Swiss city, wishing to get a glimpse into the thoughts of the young people who were leaving school and going out into the world, set ten questions before them. These questions were to be answered by the pupils in their own words. The answers were examined by a special committee, and the best ones were published in a daily newspaper, the writers being rewarded with book prizes.

The first of the ten questions read, What person, aside from your mother or father, will you take for your model as you enter upon life? Among the answers were the names of statesmen, a successful manufacturer, a loving, good woman, and a prominent Swiss pedagogue.
