The textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...

The textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was lent to me by a friend at a time when doctors could do no more for me. It seemed a direct answer to my prayer to God for help. My hip had been broken in a fall, and though I had excellent care and the best medical skill, the time came when the doctors said nothing more could be done, that even an operation would not help. The suffering was so intense that I was becoming reconciled to the thought of passing on to be rid of the pain.

When I told my friend the result of the last examination, she spoke of Christian Science and said that she had known of some wonderful healings, and that she had a copy of Science and Health. I asked to borrow it. I was a member of an orthodox church, but the Bible seemed contradictory, and there were many things I did not understand. Yet, I always prayed to God when I needed help, and never blamed Him for any evil experiences, though I did not know what had caused them.

I could not see how the reading of a book could do me any good, but I began to read Science and Health. It gave me a feeling of awe and happiness to read about Truth. I read day and night for about two weeks, and learned "the scientific statement of being" (p. 468) and the spiritual interpretation of the Lord's Prayer (pp. 16, 17).
