"He directs our path"
God's law, by which those who look to Him are guided and protected, is always harmonious. And this fact can be demonstrated by those who are willing to learn and to think according to the teachings of Christian Science.
When thought is governed by divine Mind, one's steps are taken in orderly fashion. In our affirmation of the truth, however, we must be consistent, renouncing every false belief which mortal mind sets forth for our acceptance. In so doing we may rest in the promise voiced by Isaiah, "I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight."
On one occasion a student of Christian Science was faced with what seemed to be a delicate and complicated situation. The need was for a wise decision. At this point she became anxious and overburdened by the false assumption that she was responsible for the outcome. Error persisted until she turned wholeheartedly to Truth, seeking spiritual guidance. Courage and consolation were gained in pondering Mrs. Eddy's statement on page 254 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which reads, "When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path."
Thought was lifted above the uncertainty of guesswork, and the student saw that since God governs, and governs aright, there was in reality no wrong course to follow, no loss, trickery, or deceptive maneuver to be feared, and consequently no need for confusion or anxious thought taking. Reasoning thus from the spiritual standpoint afforded her a sense of peace and confidence far greater than could have been reached through any amount of speculation or selfish human planning. It became plain to her that the real need was for spiritual enlightenment, through which error yields to Truth and good is magnified.
Human difficulties parade in many guises, some claiming unusual proportions and magnitude, while others, appearing to be less aggressive, may try to keep us from realizing God's omnipresence and goodness. But from first to last these arguments must be treated alike as unreal. The "young lion" of aggression must be subdued in human thinking, that we may be ready to cognize "the dragon" of oppression. That which testifies to a power apart from God breaks the First Commandment and should be denied reality or place in Mind's perfect creation. In the words of our Leader's beautiful poem "Satisfied" (Poems, p. 79),
"It matters not what be thy lot,
So Love doth guide;
For storm or shine, pure peace is thine,
Whate'er betide."
"It matters not"! Divine Mind is ever imparting spiritual ideas and drawing those who seek the unfoldment of His plan onward and upward into paths which are unseen by the material senses.
Christian Science dispels the mysteries associated with so-called mortal man, the dream-man, rising or falling according to personal sense, and brings into view the man of God's creating. Jesus, in his mighty Sermon on the Mount, admonishes, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." The spiritual, perfect man is not hidden behind the screens of obscurity and mystification of thought. Man, in God's image and likeness, exists now, as the only man, and expresses or shows forth the qualities of pure Mind, among which are peace, happiness, health, security, and dominion. Error of thought, such as self-pity, despondency, fear, and hopelessness, melts under the glowing radiance of God's great love; and there is no other remedy. When we are patient and obedient, as our Leader states, "He directs our path."
