If there ever was a man "born again" I am such a one
If there ever was a man "born again" I am such a one. It is with a profound sense of joy that I am impelled to tell of my experience in Christian Science, hoping that this testimony will encourage someone else to walk the narrow, but joyous, way of Truth.
Over three years ago I found myself completely enmeshed in a bog of materiality. The liquor habit had grown on me to such an extent that it imperiled my health, ruined my efficiency in my work, wrought havoc in my family, and brought about financial and moral bankruptcy. With no job and with but ten cents in my pocket, I was a desperate mortal—beset with fear, self-pity, and possessed of a befuddled mentality.
Some small voice deep within me seemed to be telling me that I should visit an old friend who had been remarkably helped by the study of Christian Science. I called on her, and was given kind and sympathetic attention, and finally was referred to a practitioner. I shall never forget the loving attitude expressed by that disciple of God. He talked calmly to me of my relationship to God and His infinite intelligence. He told me to get the Christian Science Quarterly and to read the Lesson-Sermons daily. From that moment on I have never had the desire for drink, and the smoking habit of over twenty years' standing was also broken immediately. How can I put into words my gratitude for such wonderful healings?
From then on my whole way of living was changed. I studied diligently the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, and even now each day as I read that remarkable book, I thank God for what Mrs. Eddy has given to mankind. It has dawned on me that what she wrote is a compass pointing out more than a religion—it is a way of living. With the immediate return of my health came also a job which paid well; and a return of harmony in my family, love replacing bitterness and rancor. How can I explain the joy of seeing demonstrated before my very eyes the truth that God is my source of supply, and that divine Mind knows and supplies everything its reflection needs!
My friends have repeatedly mentioned not only that I look younger, but that I am a different person. My daily prayer is that all of those friends may some day know the truth which made me free. Every day I can use this marvelous truth—demonstrated and proved two thousand years ago by our blessed Master, and brought to light for generations to come by our beloved and revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy. Impatience, ill temper, and other agencies of mortal mind are being banished to their native nothingness. Problems of employment and supply have always been met. Each day I silently, but fervently, praise God for the truth which has been proved, so many times, that "whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life," as Mrs. Eddy says on page 215 of Science and Health.
An old and persistent infection of the feet, commonly called athlete's foot, completely left me; a painful condition of piles disappeared; colds have started, but have quickly faded into unreality. What a glorious inheritance we have when we know that divine Mind gives its image and likeness all that is good and kind and right and loving and true!
Grateful? The word is inadequate to express how I feel toward Christian Science. My gratitude is deep for the privilege of membership in a branch church and for my acceptance into The Mother Church. My daily desire is this, that I may so conduct myself outwardly, and so control my inward thoughts, that I shall be a worthy representative of the great Christian Science movement To walk in the path first trod by Jesus the Christ, to strive to "seek ... first the kingdom of God," is my whole intent and purpose. For my regeneration and its consequent opportunities, I am profoundly grateful to Christian Science.
