The Reward of Overcoming
Christian Science teaches that there is only one real power—God. In doing this it is met with the seeming opposition of the carnal mind, which is altogether on the side of matter or evil. Men are called upon to face this question and to come to a right decision regarding it, for upon the decision depends their spiritual, moral, and even physical well-being.
How does Christian Science regard God and so-called matter and evil? It affirms that God is infinite Spirit and that, since He is infinite, there does not exist anything unlike Himself. It thus maintains that what is called matter has no real existence. Again, Christian Science declares that, since God is infinite good, evil is unreal. It holds steadfastly to this reasoning. If Christian Science deviated from it in any degree it would be unfaithful to revealed Truth. God is omnipotent, the only real power. God is omnipresent, the only real presence. God is omniscient, the only real intelligence. There is thus no power, presence, or intelligence apart from God. Mrs. Eddy writes on page 569 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Every mortal at some period, here or hereafter, must grapple with and overcome the mortal belief in a power opposed to God."
What is gained by admitting that God is the only real power; that in reality there is no power opposed to Him? Whenever one perceives the truth of God's allness and omnipotence, one begins to have dominion over material or sinful beliefs. Consider, for instance, the belief of disease. This belief is always associated with matter, and is supposed to result from the breaking of so-called material law. But since matter is an erroneous concept and material law has no real existence, the belief that disease is real is a fallacy. As this is seen, as disease is understood to be unreal, and denied, it is destroyed. Thus, the reward of overcoming the belief that disease is real, through the understanding of God as the only power, is the healing of disease.
