I came to Christian Science not for the healing of physical...
I came to Christian Science not for the healing of physical difficulties, but for comfort. I had witnessed many healings in my family, among them the healing of my mother of rheumatic fever. This condition caused much swelling and pain in the joints, and she was unable to move a muscle or feed herself. Help was asked of a Christian Science practitioner, and it was at once very lovingly given. Within twenty-four hours the fingers of one hand could be moved without difficulty, and from then on the improvement was rapid. At the end of three weeks she was able to be up, sit in a chair, and be moved about. Soon the healing was complete.
From witnessing this healing I felt there must be something in Christian Science to sustain me. When physical difficulties presented themselves, I was ready to turn unreservedly to God. My first healing was of blood poisoning (septic infection) in my right hand. The healing seemed slow to me, for I expected an instantaneous one, but in three weeks I was using the hand as before. The second healing which I experienced was that of a bone felon on the second finger of my right hand. It seemed very painful, but it opened and discharged, and the finger became as normal as the others.
From then on, for twenty years, I have relied on nothing but Christian Science, and many have been the healings which I have experienced, including those of gallstones, pneumonia, and kidney trouble—all brought about with the help of Christian Science practitioners and my own work in Christian Science.
