About thirteen years ago I was healed by Christian Science...

About thirteen years ago I was healed by Christian Science of a very severe attack of a stomach trouble which had been growing worse over a period of more than twenty years. I was healed—not a symptom of it has ever returned. My gratitude to God and to our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for this beautiful evidence of Christ-healing is beyond words to express.

I am also grateful for the healing in Christian Science of an injury to one of my eyes. I was accidentally jabbed in the eye with a sharp arrowlike stick. I was helped to the home of friends, where I telephoned a practitioner. I then withdrew and remained alone for a time, declaring that there are no accidents in divine Mind, and that sight is spiritual and cannot be lost or impaired. I declared this vehemently and repeated over and over "the scientificstatement of being" from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 468), all the while trying to realize its meaning. A few moments after I called the practitioner, the pain, which had been agonizing, became much less acute. I then continued to my home by motor and streetcar. Alone at home that night, I reported by telephone to the practitioner, and continued affirming the truth throughout the night.

The next morning I called a Christian Science nurse to dress the eye. Although well-meaning friends had urged me to let them examine the eye, I refused to allow anyone to look at it except the nurse, and I refrained from looking at it myself, for I did not want to see something, the seeming reality of which I was denying. When the nurse examined the eye, she began singing our Leader's beautiful hymn (Poems, pp. 4, 5) beginning, "O gentle presence," as she removed a sizable splinter, the presence of which I had endured with little pain, through the help of Christian Science. My healing followed quickly and was permanent. Many times since this experience I have sung this hymn in my heart, learning ever more of its healing power.
