Maintaining Our Standard

[Written Especially for Young People]

Perfection of character is the ideal of every truly progressive individual. We learn in Christian Science that this state of being is the result of continued right thinking, and can be attained in no other way, for as a man "thinketh in his heart, so is he."

To think rightly is impossible without having a correct standard of thought and holding to it steadfastly. Christian Science furnishes the correct standard of thinking, through the reflection of divine Mind, and shows us how to maintain it in daily life.

Often the argument assails the young student of Christian Science that it is not difficult to know theoretically what is right and wrong, but that to apply one's understanding to his human affairs is either impossible or undesirable. For example, one may know that smoking, drinking, or certain other material so-called pleasures are contrary to Christian Science, but he may believe that their indulgence is necessary to successful social, business, or school life. He may believe that criticism, unpopularity, loss, or failure may result from his refusal to depart from the true standard of thought and conduct. He may be afraid others will stamp him as "different."
