The Bible in Our Sunday School
It is sometimes rumored that the pupils of Christian Science Sunday Schools are not so well instructed in the Bible as are the children in Sunday schools of other denominations. If true, this would seem anomalous, since the Christian Science movement is founded on the Bible. Our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, is what its title implies, a "key" to the Scriptures. In this textbook and in all her other writings, Mrs. Eddy shows her love for and her knowledge of the Holy Bible. From childhood she was familiar with the history of the prophets, of Christ Jesus, and of the apostles. And in studying the teaching and works of the Master she discovered that the same spiritual law which enabled him to do his mighty works is available today, and for all time, to all whose thought is receptive to the truth.
Mrs. Eddy turned to the Bible alone in her search for Truth. It was her sole authority in the founding of the Christian Science movement. She ordained the Bible and the Christian Science textbook as the preachers in every Christian Science church throughout the world. Can we, then, as faithful and obedient teachers in Sunday school, fail to teach our pupils the great truths of the Bible, and something of the history and character of its men and women?
Jesus said to his followers, "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me." When a member of a Christian Science church is appointed to the precious privilege of teaching in Sunday school, he or she naturally turns immediately to the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy to learn what rules govern this teaching. We find in Article XX, Section 2, these imperative words: "The Sabbath School children shall be taught the Scriptures." This By-Law makes such teaching obligatory.
