Twenty years ago in a distressed condition, without hope...

Twenty years ago in a distressed condition, without hope in this world, I called upon a dear sister to advise me concerning a domestic problem which had reached the point where human aid seemed out of the question. I did not then know that this sister had become interested in the study of Christian Science, and merely called on her out of the depth of my despair. She came to my home immediately from a distant city and within a few hours harmony was restored and the peace of God was felt. My sister then told us of Christian Science, and we began faithfully to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. My sister explained to me how this truth, when applied, operates in our human affairs. She told me that during the entire trip from her home to mine, a trip which lasted about twenty-four hours, she repeated constantly these words from our textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 16): "Our Father-Mother God, all-harmonious, ... Adorable One." This declaration and realization held to and declared constantly for a period of one day brought to our home the much-needed harmony.

After this first proof many problems were worked out in our lives and many obstacles overcome. While I received much help through the loving ministration of practitioners, and experienced and witnessed many healings for my family, there seemed to be no growth in my understanding. Faith in God I had in abundance, but it was a blind faith without understanding, which left me helpless and hopeless for a period of years. A discordant physical condition which had manifested itself became gradually worse, and finally made me so completely miserable that I was unable to attend to my household duties. There was evidence of an internal growth and misplacement of organs. I was constantly hindered by constipation with its concomitant headaches, backache, and weakness. All in all, my life was a burden. Added to this, I experienced great grief when one very dear to me passed on.

At this point I was led to write to a worker in the vineyard whose testimony in the Christian Science Sentinel had made an impression on me. There seemed to be a similarity of experience. She testified that she had overcome a problem similar to the one for which I needed help. Her help was offered and accepted, and then the healing work began. I soon learned that I did not primarily need healing of a physical trouble, but that the healing had to be in my thought. Through studying the references which were given me I learned that my need was for more loving patience, and less criticism for those around me. Instead of bitter denunciation of those who seemingly did not think and act rightly, I learned to exercise more compassion for their shortcomings and to correct my own faults more frequently. I felt a sense of peace and uplifted consciousness such as I had never experienced before. Day and night I repeated certain statements from the Bible and the works of our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. This became second nature to me, and a new heaven and a new earth indeed were revealed to me in a world all my own.
