In his "Current Communal Comments" in your issue of the sixth inst., "Hamabit," commenting on the fact that many Jews have become adherents of Christian Science, stated, "Jewish adherents to Christian Science must realize that the movement is a church activity in which a belief in the divinity of Christ is a fundamental tenet."

To obviate misunderstanding, may I explain that Christian Science teaches the divinity of the Christ, as distinguished from the human Jesus. On page 333 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Christian Science textbook, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, states: "The word Christ is not properly a synonym for Jesus, though it is commonly so used. Jesus was a human name, which belonged to him in common with other Hebrew boys and men, for it is identical with the name Joshua, the renowned Hebrew leader. On the other hand, Christ is not a name so much as the divine title of Jesus. Christ expresses God's spiritual, eternal nature. The name is synonymous with Messiah, and alludes to the spirituality which is taught, illustrated, and demonstrated in the life of which Christ Jesus was the embodiment." And on page 332 she says, "Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness."

Christian Science holds that "God is one Lord"—infinite, indivisible, immutable, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent Mind. It unreservedly accepts the basic exhortation set out in Deuteronomy: "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might."
