Healing Acute Disease

A certain type of acute disease often seems prevalent during the winter months, due in part to false beliefs about the effect of weather and climate. Many persons, however, believe this disease to be the result of germ infection. Recently a physician on the faculty of an American university advanced a new theory with regard to the cure of this disease. He is quoted as saying that recovery from it depends largely upon the presence of so-called "police" cells, and the thoroughness with which they perform their supposed function of destroying the disease germs.

Christian Science teaches that in reality there are no disease germs; hence, no so-called germ diseases. However, on page 164 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says: "It is just to say that generally the cultured class of medical practitioners are grand men and women, therefore they are more scientific than are false claimants to Christian Science. But all human systems based on material premises are minus the unction of divine Science. Much yet remains to be said and done before all mankind is saved and all the mental microbes of sin and all diseased thought-germs are exterminated."

Christian Science has proved successful in healing many cases of the form of disease under consideration through recognizing fear as one of the principal causes of this as well as of other kinds of disease. "Inflammation," writes our Leader (ibid., pp. 414, 415), "is fear, an excited state of mortals which is not normal." And she continues, "Inflammation never appears in a part which mortal thought does not reach." Inflammation, then, and the fear which causes it exist only in belief; that is, they exist solely as phenomena of the so-called mortal mind, and their cure lies in realizing the infinity of immortal Mind, Life, Truth, Love, in which there is no fear, no inflammation, no disease, no death. It is recorded in Luke's Gospel that when Jesus healed Peter's wife's mother of "a great fever," he "stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her," showing clearly that the Master understood the cause of her suffering to be a mental one.
