"Forgive us our debts"
In order to meet their financial obligations many good, honest people are compelled through circumstances apparently beyond their control, to undergo great sacrifice of personal comfort and of much that is considered desirable. Cheerfully they stand up to their misfortune, and with admirable courage they battle with adversity. To these brave hearts Christian Science brings a ray of hope, as they foresee the dawn of spiritual understanding which will enable them to demonstrate that all-important statement uttered by the Master, Christ Jesus, "The kingdom of God is within you."
When we remember the marvelous works of Jesus and his compassionate love for mankind, can we have any doubt as to the practicability of the truth he taught? The kingdom of God, or reign of harmony, the realization of the presence in abundance of all that is good, is within reach of everyone now. Furthermore, scientifically speaking, it is actually already in our possession for God is All-in-all.
In accepting the truth and practicability of this statement, we are forced to the conclusion that any condition contrary to harmony is in the nature of illusion. Illusion is a phenomenon of ignorance, and the remedy for ignorance is understanding. What was it that destroyed the "flat earth" illusion? It was an understanding of the fact concerning the earth, namely, that it is round. True understanding is spiritually mental. Does it not follow that the establishment of the kingdom of God, that is, the resolving of any inharmonious or imperfect condition into a condition of harmony, is a wholly mental process, dependent not on circumstances but on thought? Thought is antecedent; circumstance is consequent.
