Twenty years ago I was healed through reading the first chapter in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the chapter on prayer. Since then I have learned that "desire is prayer" (ibid., p. 1), and that right desire is always fulfilled.

Before I had heard a Christian Science church service or a lecture, visited a Reading Room, or known of practitioners, neighbors who were not Christian Scientists saw my condition, and asked me why I did not try Science, for the doctors had given me up. A Sentinel was given me to read, and through it I learned of the textbook and asked to borrow it from a Scientist. The next morning her mother gave me a copy. After reading but a few days I realized that God did not make disease. He did not make anything that could make it, so I could not have it; what seemed to be was powerless. Much fear was destroyed, and the fever left.

I had been in bed for two years with tuberculosis, the doctor having said that one lung was gone and the other affected. My aunt, uncle, and cousin had passed on with the same disease. People who knew of the family did not expect me to get well. The doctors were kind, but could do nothing more. Upon hearing that I was well, one of them said it was a miracle.
