Statements versus Misstatements

Nowhere does Mrs. Eddy more concisely expose the illusion of mortal mind and matter than in her words in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 174), "Matter is a misstatement of Mind." Here she presents matter as a misstatement of actual being, and not as a tangible phenomenon of mortal thought to be feared or indulged. Is it fitting to fear a misstatement of Mind or to place reliance on it?

We gain strength and comfort by applying the logical sequence of our Leader's statement. From it we deduce that disease, suffering, decrepitude, poverty, and so forth are but objected misstatements or misapprehensions of infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation. They are not material entities. "We wrestle not against flesh and blood," and these ghosts of misbelief cannot wrestle with the student who daily adds to his spiritual understanding through study and practice. As fast as we exchange reliance on matter for reliance on God, Spirit, we lose fear, for then we know and prove that mortal mind and matter can neither harm nor help us.

Spiritual substance, health, harmony, beauty, abundance, are evidences of Mind which remain intact to be discerned and demonstrated through Christian Science. Therefore we should loyally bar our thought and conversation against the intrusions of material belief. How? By steadfastly rejoicing in the statements of spiritual facts with which our Leader's writings abound.
