About four years ago I was afflicted with partial deafness, first in one ear, then in the other, and then in both. I worked on this problem according to my understanding of Christian Science, and also had treatments from practitioners, but did not receive the desired healing. After this condition had existed for some time, I was elected to a position of responsibility in the church of which I am a member. Then the tempter, in the form of mental suggestion, came to me and whispered that it was not fair to the other members or to myself to continue in office under such a handicap, and that I should resign. I was encouraged, however, by an experienced worker to stand firm at the post of duty, and he pointed out that there was no reason why I should not be healed while continuing in office.

Some time ago I was discussing an entirely different problem with another Christian Scientist, and he said that the difficulty with many people was that they did not know the nature of the evil which was afflicting them and therefore were not successful in handling it, and he called my attention to the By-Law entitled "Alertness to Duty" in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy (Art. VIII, Sect. 6), which reads in part as follows: "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind."

This conversation was on a Friday afternoon, and I was so roused and inspired that I went home and resolved to work for the Cause of Christian Science, for the church, and impersonally for the workers in that church, in a different way from what I had been doing. I did so that evening, and again on Saturday and Sunday, and on Monday morning my hearing suddenly returned. It was a great joy to hear sounds I had not heard for over three years, such as the ticking of the clock in the adjoining room, the rustle of paper and clothing, and, best of all, the testimonies in our Wednesday evening meetings. I felt as if I had been suddenly released from prison and had found my freedom again.
