I became a student of Christian Science after witnessing...
I became a student of Christian Science after witnessing a wonderful healing of my wife, who had been given up by physicians. I was quickly healed of pneumonia and, as many others have done, I accepted all but gave nothing in return, relying on others to do my work. Being what is called successful, and in good health, I did not feel the urge for deep thinking, so when misfortune came to me, I was not able to meet it. My house was built on shifting sands, so when the winds of adversity came, it fell.
I was employed as a buyer and manager for a large department store in a western city, when suddenly there came a request for my resignation. This was a great shock, as I had been with the concern for seven years and seemingly our relations had been satisfactory. I had held similar positions in other places and was considered an expert in my line. This request brought forth great resentment, self-pity, hurt pride, and fear of age on my part. I soon found a position in another city and state; but this new position was much lower in standing, and instead of appreciating my blessing in being taken care of so quickly, I became more vindictive, nursing my hate and seeming wrongs, thereby generating more resentful feeling, with its accompaniments of discouragement and disappointment. Thus my thought was opened for mortal mind to obscure my understanding of Christian Science.
After two attacks of influenza, followed by mountain fever, which is akin to so-called walking typhoid, I went down and almost out. After being taken home from the store one day, I was not able to return. Two days later a caller from the store brought me a letter releasing me from my contract on account of illness. This was the last straw. From then on I have but a vague recollection of what took place during my illness. I do remember that I had the most horrid hallucinations, was extremely hard to manage, and became very violent. This continued for two months, then reason gradually returned. Thanks to God and the loving work of a Christian Science practitioner, I came through safely. My healing took a number of months. This occurred in 1923.
