In May, 1932, while my husband was absent from home, our little son, aged three, became ill. I called in a doctor, who said the child was very ill and that I must send for my husband. The doctor called in a specialist, who diagnosed the case as spinal meningitis, and removed the child to a hospital, where a brain specialist and four other doctors saw him. It was considered a hopeless case.
A friend advised me to try Christian Science; so I visited a practitioner. I went in, a weeping, hopeless woman, and came away joyful, with my thought uplifted and certain that God would heal my child. From the moment the practitioner took up work the child's temperature dropped almost to normal and he made rapid steps to recovery, greatly to the astonishment of the doctor and nurses. The hospital authorities expected aftereffects in the shape of physical deformity or mental unsoundness, and detained him in the hospital longer than was necessary. In three weeks they sent for me to bring him home. The doctor in charge of the case was so impressed that he asked permission to visit the child occasionally, unprofessionally. We finally told the doctor that Christian Science had healed the child. He remarked that whatever had brought about the healing, it was a miracle, for he had examined the child and put him under every known test, and there was now no trace whatsoever of the disease.
Some weeks after we brought our son home, whooping cough was raging in our suburb. Everyone hoped the child would not get it. One night I was awakened by an awful coughing. My first impulse was to run to the child, but something seemed to stay me. I repeated part of the Lord's Prayer and fell asleep. The next morning there was no sign whatever of any cold or cough.
