Hamburger Anzeiger

In an article in the Hamburger Anzeiger of September 17, it is written: "The [Christian Science] church teaches that pain and sickness do not really exist, but exist only in our imagination, and therefore can be overcome by a strong Christian-ethical attitude."

This statement misrepresents Christian Science teaching. The Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, says on this point (p. 460): "Sickness is neither imaginary nor unreal,—that is, to the frightened, false sense of the patient. Sickness is more than fancy; it is solid conviction. It is therefore to be dealt with through right apprehension of the truth of being."

Christian Science is based on the pure teaching of Christ Jesus; it declares that ignorance of and disobedience to the divine law which Jesus revealed to mankind are the cause of all sickness, sorrow, and misery, of all discord and sin in the world; while the simple and natural obedience to this law dissolves discordant conditions of every kind and redeems man, as Jesus taught and demonstrated. Christian Science is proving this today by innumerable healings.
