In a sermon reported in your issue of October 13, the statement was made that Christian Scientists say to one who is ill, "You are not suffering—you only think you are." To be understood, such a statement, if made, would require explanation. To have any healing efficacy from a Christian Science point of view, it would further require to be supported by spiritual understanding, by a knowledge of God and of man's relationship to Him.

On page 465 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy defines God as "incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." From this definition it follows that man, made in the image and likeness of God, is never ill, and can be conscious only of good, of that which God knows and creates. If it were otherwise, God would not be omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent. To attain this state of consciousness Christian Scientists endeavor to think as Christ Jesus thought, to acquire the Mind of Christ. In proportion as they do so, they discern the unreality of disease and prove their understanding by healing the sick and reforming the sinner.
