"Unto the perfect day"
Mary Baker Eddy gave to the world not only her remarkable textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," but also the Manual of The Mother Church, which governs the activities of the Christian Science movement. In this little volume are the rules and regulations given for the protection and advancement of our Cause. With great foresight and spiritual intuition our Leader was able to perceive what was necessary for the future advancement of Christian Science. Those who obey the Manual find themselves following the lines of right activity which lead to success and spiritual healing power.
Obedience to the admonitions contained in the Manual might well be compared to that of a crew on an ocean liner, which receives orders and promptly executes them. A student of Christian Science, while en route to Europe on a great ocean liner, observed the activity of those employed to operate the ship. He was shown the charts and instruments used by navigators to determine the direction of the ship and to keep it on its course; and it was explained to him that by obeying certain laws seamen can navigate ships with accuracy. Obedience to all orders given is absolutely necessary, for disobedience might cause loss of both life and property. Hence obedience is a rule in maritime life.
The student of Christian Science realized that as he was obedient to the orders and commands given in our Leader's works, he could rightfully expect to navigate his ship of experience over the sea of mortal beliefs. He further realized that the charts and instruments used to guide him were the Bible and the writings of our Leader. Through close adherence to them he could keep his consciousness so filled with the truths about God and man that error could find no place to lodge. Constant communion with God would help him to maintain his sense of at-one-ment and keep him in the spirit of receptivity, whereby he could at all times hear the "still small voice" of Truth.
