It is with heartfelt gratitude that I recount a few of the many blessings which I have received through the study of Christian Science. I had always believed that Jesus performed the healings described in the New Testament, but I never expected to see such healings take place in this age.
In 1917 I became a student in a United States Training Camp, and during the course of training I became afflicted with the mumps. Soon complications appeared that made walking almost impossible. I received good care, but the painful symptoms persisted. At last the doctor told me that he could do nothing more for me, and that a complete rest was the only way out of my misery. In the meantime I had been commissioned a lieutenant in the army, and I felt that discharge from the service on account of a childish ailment would be a disgrace which I could never live down.
I was in despair when a brother officer who had taken an interest in my case said: "Why don't you try Christian Science? Scientists believe that it is just as easy to heal sickness as it is to heal sin. In fact it is easier to heal sickness, because a fellow wants to get rid of it, while he holds on to sin. God never made sickness, and you can overcome your trouble by realizing that sickness has no power over you." His words seemed so reasonable that I took heart at once. He told me that many people had been healed of disease by reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and when he offered to lend me his copy of the book I immediately accepted. The first words of the Preface (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings," convinced me that I had found a way out of my misery, and I spent every spare moment studying the textbook.
