It is with heartfelt gratitude that I recount a few of the many blessings which I have received through the study of Christian Science. I had always believed that Jesus performed the healings described in the New Testament, but I never expected to see such healings take place in this age.

In 1917 I became a student in a United States Training Camp, and during the course of training I became afflicted with the mumps. Soon complications appeared that made walking almost impossible. I received good care, but the painful symptoms persisted. At last the doctor told me that he could do nothing more for me, and that a complete rest was the only way out of my misery. In the meantime I had been commissioned a lieutenant in the army, and I felt that discharge from the service on account of a childish ailment would be a disgrace which I could never live down.

I was in despair when a brother officer who had taken an interest in my case said: "Why don't you try Christian Science? Scientists believe that it is just as easy to heal sickness as it is to heal sin. In fact it is easier to heal sickness, because a fellow wants to get rid of it, while he holds on to sin. God never made sickness, and you can overcome your trouble by realizing that sickness has no power over you." His words seemed so reasonable that I took heart at once. He told me that many people had been healed of disease by reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and when he offered to lend me his copy of the book I immediately accepted. The first words of the Preface (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings," convinced me that I had found a way out of my misery, and I spent every spare moment studying the textbook.

The trouble yielded slowly because there was so much fearful, erroneous thinking to be overcome, but I made steady progress and did not lose a day's training because of the disease. Finally all fear of the disease dropped from my consciousness and I was healed. As a result of my study, one thought stood out clearly, that all power belongs to God, and He can save me from any trouble that may threaten me. It was not long before I had an opportunity to demonstrate this truth.

One day I was stricken very suddenly with illness and was removed to the base hospital. The medical officers would not tell me from what disease I was suffering, but placed me under close observation in a room by myself. Shortly afterwards I seemed to be passing on. The officers held a consultation by my bedside, and, believing me unconscious, freely discussed the case. I was terrified to learn that I was suffering from influenza complicated with spinal meningitis. They agreed that it would be useless to send a telegram to my parents in another state, as I should be gone before they could possibly arrive. They decided to go to dinner and to continue the consultation later in the evening. They filed out and left me alone.

At first I was too stunned to think. It was Christmas eve, and a group of nurses out in the hall began to sing a carol: "Glory to God in the highest." A wonderful thought illumined my consciousness: God has all power and might and can save me; God is my Life, and death has no power over His children. All fear left me. I broke out into a profuse sweat. The pain left me, and I was healed. When the officers returned they were astonished at my recovery and declared that a miracle had taken place. One of them later told me that he had not expected to see me alive when they returned.

Since that time I have experienced countless proofs of God's ever-presence and the powerlessness of the erroneous beliefs of sin, sickness, and death. Our revered Leader states this truth concisely on page 473 of the textbook: "God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power."

Smoking, a taste for alcoholic liquors, susceptibility to colds and sore throat, and many other errors have been overcome; while fear, resentment, hatred, jealousy, worry, and other grave faults are being destroyed through the study of the Bible, the works of our Leader, and the periodicals published by The Christian Science Publishing Society. Reading and using the advertisements in The Christian Science Monitor have proved very helpful in overcoming timidity and lack of confidence.

I am grateful to God for Christian Science; to Christ Jesus, who lovingly showed us the way; to our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who has revealed to this age the necessary human steps to be taken if we would follow in the way; to the faithful practitioners who have steadied my feet in times of trouble; and to the brother officer who recommended the study of Christian Science. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, and for participation in some of the activities of the Christian Science movement.
