Your issue of May 3 contained an article which attempted to explain why many are turning to nonmedical methods of treatment. As Christian Science is mentioned, I shall appreciate your publishing this explanation.

One principal reason why many people have turned to Christian Science is because all other methods of healing had failed to relieve them. It would therefore seem just and reasonable to allow everyone to choose the method of treatment he deems most efficacious, even though it may differ from those approved by the medical schools.

It is not necessary for a Christian Scientist to pass a test before a board of medical examiners in order to practice Christian Science successfully. Christian healing is dependent upon an understanding of spiritual law and causation, not upon knowledge of medical theories. An ordinary education supplies all the information on material subjects that a Christian Science practitioner requires. Recognizing this distinction, nearly every state legislature in the United States has legalized the practice of Christian Science, requiring only compliance with sanitary laws. Courts have likewise recognized the constitutionality of such laws, as evidenced by the decision of the Supreme Court of North Carolina: "The law says that the M.D.'s may examine and certify whether an applicant is competent to be one of their number, and no one can practice medicine and surgery without it; but they cannot decide for mankind that their own system of healing is now and ever shall be the only correct one, and that all others are to be repressed by the strong arm of the law" (State vs. Biggs, 133 N. C. Reports 729, 64 L. R. A. 139).
