The Protection of Principle

In fulfilling his Messianic mission Christ Jesus preached that the kingdom of heaven is at hand, and he coincidently furnished verifying proofs thereof in his demonstrations over discord and evil. The Master's understanding that God, good, is the only power and Lawgiver, that His kingdom or government is ever present and supreme on earth as it is in heaven, enabled him to heal the sick, give sight to the blind, annul the seeming attractive influence of sin, and raise the dead. There is no record that his healings antagonized an intrenched medical monopoly, but his teachings so aroused the opposition of the religious hierarchy that the best man the world has known was crucified.

Referring to the carnal mind traits which persecuted the Master, Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 55), "The advancing century, from a deadened sense of the invisible God, to-day subjects to unchristian comment and usage the idea of Christian healing enjoined by Jesus; but this does not affect the invincible facts." And what are these "invincible facts"? They may be summed up thus: Some fifty odd years ago, after verifying by healing works the spiritual revelation which had come to her, Mary Baker Eddy shared these revealed truths with the world in Science and Health. Since that time, uncounted thousands of people the world around have gained the true knowledge of God and His Christ through the study of this textbook. Acquaintance with God as divine Love, Life, Mind, as the only cause and creator of all that is real, has led to discernment of the correlative fact that evil, disease, discord, death, are unreal, being lacking in divine authority and support. There is no doubt that this is what Christ Jesus referred to when he said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," for Christian Science has brought freedom from sin, sorrow, sickness; freedom from mental and material penury; freedom from jealousy, hate, and animality; from degradation, despair, and the fear of death. Invincible, impressive, yes, inspiring facts!

Although the beneficiaries and adherents of Christian Science are persuaded that it is the law of God, and that it is adequate to meet humanity's every need, they do not attempt to force their views upon others. Christian Scientists recognize that the great majority still believe in, and seem bound by, material theories about healing disease, and they have due consideration for the feelings and fears of those who seem thus bound. Therefore, in compliance with Mrs. Eddy's specific instructions, Christian Scientists earnestly endeavor to obey all laws, including those requiring the reporting and quarantining of certain cases of disease. This is done on the basis of the Golden Rule, "Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them." Christian Scientists know that their help and healing are due to God's law of harmony and perfection, which is absolutely just; and they have the assurance that obedience to human laws, on the basis of the Golden Rule, entitles them to the protection of divine law.
