Christian Science is a revival of primitive Christianity...

Oberländer Tagblatt

Christian Science is a revival of primitive Christianity and is founded wholly on the Bible. The textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was first published in 1875 and was revised from time to time by Mrs. Eddy up to 1909, but no revisions have been made since that time. The essential purpose of Christian Science is to help suffering humanity to overcome its sins. That physical healing follows in the wake of this is in accordance with Christ Jesus' promises. To John the Baptist he offered his works as evidence that he was the Messiah; and, furthermore, he said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do."

The ability to heal sickness and sin is not founded on so-called personal power, but on eternal divine Principle, the understanding of which signifies knowing the truth. This is what Jesus meant when he said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." The truth which makes free is that God is Spirit, Life, Love, and that man, created by God, is the expression of God's being; he is not material, but spiritual. "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing."

Materiality, the belief that man is a material, sinful creature, is an illusory state of consciousness, the deep sleep which fell on Adam. The way to awake, however, is open, for Christ, "the way, the truth, and the life," is revealed in Christian Science as "the divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error" (Science and Health, p. 583).
