Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

During the period covered by this report the first duty of Committees on Publication stated in our Manual, to correct impositions and injustices in publications, has been somewhat lessened, due to lack of newspaper articles needing correction. This is a sign of progress which naturally follows the establishment of friendly relations with editors and the better understanding of Christian Science now prevailing among readers of the secular press. Furthermore, it is a sign that this office is accomplishing its chief purpose, namely, to obviate the need of corrections. On the other hand, the year witnessed an extraordinary increase in correspondence of an informative and instructive nature with the public press. Finding the columns of newspapers available—finding an expanding credit with editors, as it were—the Committee made much of our approved ways and means for making Christian Science better known.

The week-day morning Christian Science radio broadcast presented under the auspices of the Committee on Publication in coöperation with Christian Science churches and societies in this state, continues as a channel of real service to our Cause. The mission of our radio broadcast is to refresh the radio audience of the central states in accordance with Mrs. Eddy's command, "Give them a cup of cold water in Christ's name, and never fear the consequences" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 570). Grateful testimonies in our churches and letters of appreciation received indicate that the harvest already is plenteous. Reports received by this office show that listeners have been healed of tuberculosis, neuralgia, lameness, rheumatism, the smoking habit, grief, worry, fear, limitation, and inharmony in the home. Our program is heard in the state hospital and in the penal institutions. Such helpful results indicate that the use of the radio reminds us of Mrs. Eddy's words as to "the pursuit of modern material inventions" when she said in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 345), "They light the way to the Church of Christ. We use them, we make them our figures of speech. They are preparing the way for us."

The Dean of Northwestern University Medical School graciously invited the Committee to address a group of medical students on the subject of Christian Science healing. By permission of The Christian Science Board of Directors, the Committee filled this engagement on the evening of February 10, 1932. At the close of the address interesting questions were answered. The students, comprising those of differing religious beliefs, were most attentive and appreciative.
