It was in 1914 that Christian Science was first brought...
It was in 1914 that Christian Science was first brought to my attention by my brother-in-law, who was visiting me from a distant city. He told me that if I would read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy he was sure it would make me well, and I answered that no book I could read would help me physically, as physicians and surgeons had told me I should always suffer. However, before he left for his home I had faithfully promised that when I was feeling better I would get the book and read it from beginning to end, although I was very sure that Christian Science could do nothing for me. During all the long years of suffering with inflammation of the rectum I had prayed that I might find the true God, and the peace "which passeth all understanding."
Weeks passed by and I did not get the book. Then came a time of discouragement, despair, and pain, and my little daughter tearfully asked me why I did not get the book. I replied that it could not do anything for me, and I was too sick to go and get it. How eagerly she said, "Let me get it for you." And to comfort her I consented. The following day she obtained Science and Health from the Boston Public Library. Although I was living in a suburb of Boston at the time, I did not know a Christian Scientist, had never heard of a church or Reading Room, and had never heard Mrs. Eddy mentioned.
I was alone; and as I examined the outside of the book, which was very much worn, I said, "Well, you are Christian; you can't do me any harm if you don't do me any good." From the moment I opened it and began to read until the time came for me to go to bed, I could not lay that book down, nor did I want to. During that short time I became a new creature, and came to know the meaning of the words, "Ye must be born again." One who had been most kind through all the years of suffering prepared to give me the medical treatment I had been having every night for years, and became alarmed when I said I was not taking any medicine that night. The question came, "What will you do in the morning?" and I answered that I did not know. But when morning came joy flooded my whole being, for I found as I arose that I could move quickly and that awful dream had gone forever. I was whole!
