Replying to "T. B. B." 's letter of the 20th, it is clearly indicated in the Old and New Testaments that God is Spirit, that the true man—His image and likeness—is spiritual, and that His universe is spiritual. It is generally conceded and assumed by Christians that the above statement is true, whereas mortal man and the material universe are temporal, fleeting, and unreal to spiritual sense. Christian Science is based on the Bible teaching that God is infinite Spirit and that the spiritual universe, including spiritual man, is His infinite manifestation or expression.

Jesus says, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." To understand the teachings of Christian Science one cannot view the subject from a material standpoint. The understanding of Christian Science must be gained through the illumination of spiritual sense, reason, and demonstration. Paul says, "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

Therefore to understand and demonstrate the power of Spirit, God, in human affairs requires much spirituality, of which we have gained little in comparison with that of the master Christian, Jesus the Christ. In our day Mary Baker Eddy has shown in her life-work great spirituality; and we consider that her explanations of the "resurrection" are reasonable, logical, and scientific. The Bible tells us that death is an enemy which must be overcome. Jesus was "the way," that is, he showed mankind how to rise from belief in mortality to the realization of immortality. If Jesus' resurrection was brought about by some supernatural power it would be of no benefit to us, and could not possibly be accomplished by others. But Jesus said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." To material sense Jesus seemed to die, but his spiritually illumined consciousness did not die. To prove this, after the resurrection he showed his disciples the same body that was placed in the sepulcher from the cross on Calvary. Christian Science teaches that mortal man holds in his consciousness the concept of himself and the material universe. These concepts do not leave us completely until we awake from the material sense of existence to our true sonship with God—in His image and likeness—spiritual and perfect.
