About seventeen years ago, when I had no faith in God or anything in the world, a friend presented me with a copy of the Christian Science textbook. I had never heard of Christian Science before, but just by reading Science and Health I was healed.

I have been healed of malaria of twenty-five years' standing, of neurasthenia, ulcerated stomach, sick headaches, and eye trouble, for which I had worn dark glasses, as well as reading glasses, for eighteen years. Two doctors who were attending me at the time said that there was no hope of recovery for me. These diseases disappeared before I had read the textbook through. I had read to about the middle of the book when the truth expressed in a certain sentence seemed to blot out the picture of my former experiences. Since that day I have eaten everything set before me, whereas before I was always on a diet. I threw away my glasses, and have never needed them since. The habits of smoking, drinking, and profanity were also overcome through reading Science and Health. I had smoked for thirty years, and at that time was smoking about fifty cigarettes a day, besides a pipe; and I drank alcoholic liquors to excess. These bad habits simply disappeared without any special effort on my part, as I was not yet fully aware of the healing power of Christian Science.

We have passed through many trials since my first healings in Science, and God has helped us through them all. My sixteen-year-old daughter has never taken medicine, and has not been ill for more than one or two days at a time.

I am grateful to the friend who so kindly gave me Science and Health, and to the practitioners who have helped me when I have been unable to help myself. I am very grateful also for the Sanatorium in Boston, which I visited about five years ago; and for having been able to visit The Mother Church and Mrs. Eddy's homes, including her birthplace at Bow, New Hampshire.
