"Know yourself spiritually and scientifically"
[Written Especially for Young People]
In the years devoted to what the world calls getting an education, it is well to remember the familiar words from Proverbs, "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding." It is wisdom to realize that mere intellectuality, cleverness, and the ability to obtain high grades in school are not, after all, the prime necessity of a good student, nor are they the final goal of education. The wisdom recommended must consist, rather, in the ability to adapt education to living, to make our living joyous, abundant, and profitable, whether we have many or few of the privileges and opportunities opened up by education.
How are we to go about getting this wisdom? Mrs. Eddy pointed out the true way of wisdom when she wrote in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 359), "Even though you aver that the material senses are indispensable to man's existence or entity, you must change the human concept of life, and must at length know yourself spiritually and scientifically."
To know ourselves "spiritually and scientifically" might well be regarded as the goal of true education, namely, the getting of wisdom and understanding. The young student who is a Christian Scientist is peculiarly fitted to acquire this wisdom and understanding, because of two factors gained through his teaching at home and in the Christian Science Sunday School: first, his understanding of God as ever present intelligence or Mind; secondly, the realization that man exists inseparable from Mind, as the reflection or likeness of divine intelligence.
