Over twenty-five years ago I attended a Christian Science...

Over twenty-five years ago I attended a Christian Science Wednesday evening testimony meeting for the first time. I always remember these lines in a verse of one of the hymns sung at that service:

"My hope I cannot measure,
My path in life is free."

I wondered whether I should ever be able to sing those lines from the heart and to say that my path in life was free. I had been very delicate from early childhood; I had had heart trouble from birth; I suffered severely from rheumatism; my sight had been giving me trouble and I was wearing glasses. To add to all this I had been told by one of the leading London surgeons, as well as by our family physician, that unless I had an operation to remove an internal growth I could not possibly live more than six months. I was exceedingly unhappy, and when faced with the choice of an operation or death I was almost at the point of preferring the latter.

At that time, however, I was told of Christian Science and a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was lent to me. I read it very eagerly and with the conviction that its message was true. A little while later I went to stay with a relative who was a Christian Scientist, and she introduced me to a practitioner from whom I had treatment. After three weeks the practitioner told me I was healed, and I returned home to my people with this joyful news. However, they had great anxiety and fear at my having delayed the operation in order to have treatment in Christian Science, and I found that my assurances that I was free from pain did not allay their fears. These had been heightened by the surgeon who had expressed great apprehension at the delay and impressed upon my parents the seriousness of this. After consultation with the practitioner it was felt that the kindest thing to do would be to allay these fears by allowing the surgeon to examine me again. This was done, and to my great joy he informed my mother that the result was extremely satisfactory, and that there was no need of an operation. He said that the growth had become so small that it was not any longer endangering my life. He added that it was a miracle, as according to materia medica there was nothing that could dissolve a growth of that nature, and he could see that if Christian Science had dissolved it to that extent it would do so entirely.

That was over twenty-five years ago, and I have remained free and well; the heart trouble and the rheumatism have also been healed, and the glasses laid aside. These are a few of the healings I have experienced as a result of the application of the teachings of Christian Science. Above all I am grateful for the happiness and activity it has brought into my life in enabling me to be a means of bringing the truth to others. When I first read the textbook I had the desire to do this, and God has blessed it and caused it to multiply, as He does every right desire. It is impossible to express adequately the gratitude I feel to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who has revealed this truth to the world.
