Over six years ago we moved from a large city to a small town, a change in business deciding the move. I was a stranger to everyone and everything, and had only a little understanding of Christian Science which I had gained a short time previous to the move. I knew as well as I know now that Christian Science was with me to stay, and with this in thought I voiced to a practitioner when I was leaving that should I need help I would write or wire her. She lovingly replied, "Don't do that, just call a practitioner in your town," thereby immediately giving me my first lesson in relying on God for guidance, for which I have been indeed very grateful.

One Sunday afternoon my little two-year-old girl, sitting on the bed while I was dressing her, suddenly lay down and said: "Mother, I'm so tired. I want to sleep." Having just awakened from a nap, I knew she could not be sleepy, but left her lying down. Within half an hour I heard her talking, and going to the bed I was almost overcome with fear on finding her manifesting a fever that made her delirious. I became fearful for two reasons: I was so young in Christian Science that I thought I could not handle the difficulty myself, and I did not know where to reach a practitioner. I sat down and prayed to be guided, when suddenly the thought came very clearly to me: Why, God is with you in your home as well as with the practitioner! These words comforted me so that I was able to think intelligently, and then I realized I must cast out the sense of fear that was handling me before I could help the child. This was almost entirely overcome after some mental work, and then I proceeded to read from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I read for a while, and then my husband read. We continued this for several hours, when the little one became quiet and fell asleep. I continued reading for a while longer, and I too fell asleep. I awoke with the realization that the child was trying to say something. I turned on the light and rushed to her crib. She looked up at me and said: "Mother, God took it all away. God is good, mother." I was so happy I cried for joy, knowing she was well, and that she knew God had healed her. I have realized since that at this time I too received a healing of fear for my children.

This same child was most beautifully protected from what seemed at the time a very serious accident. I was shopping in a store where one had to go through a turnstile to get in and out of the store. Just as the little one and I started out, a man came in. He swung the turnstile around with such force it threw her headfirst into a large plate glass case. I immediately declared it a lie, but the people gathered around expressed so much fear that I turned away until they brought her to me. She was at once examined by those present, all insisting she must be seriously cut on the head, but in no place was the skin even broken—there was just a bruise under the chin, and this disappeared during the day. This was indeed the protection of divine Love.
