When Christian Science was first presented to me I was living with people who were prejudiced against it, and when the literature was given me I was advised by them against reading it. At about the same time I was engaged to care for a hall in which Christian Science services were held. I was lovingly invited to attend these services, but again demurred.
Several months later I moved to another city, and circumstances developed which caused me to become despondent. I consulted a physician concerning a physical condition, and was told I ought to undergo an operation. It was then that I went to a Christian Science Reading Room and borrowed the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Through reading the textbook and attending the church services I was healed, "the operation of divine Principle" (Science and Health, Pref., p. xi) being substituted for the proposed surgical operation.
I moved to a small town where there was no church or society; I had a good position and was satisfied to remain there. It was not long, however, until, through no fault of my own, I was discharged. Several years later it dawned upon my consciousness that "even if you cling to a sense of personal joys, spiritual Love will force you to accept what best promotes your growth" (ibid., p. 266), for since that time I have been located where it has been possible for me both to receive and to give more of good.
