Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication
Oregon.
Misrepresentations and critical statements regarding Christian Science and our Leader are being reduced to a minimum in the local Oregon press as newspapermen and publishers become more familiar with Mrs. Eddy's teachings and their effects upon her followers; for Christian Science is being more and more thought of and spoken of as a Christian denomination to be respected and reckoned with as one of permanent character, whose fruits cannot be ignored. Only one statement appeared in our newspapers the past year which required publishing an answer.
There are also gratifying indications of increasing tolerance and neighborliness toward Christian Science on the part of other denominations. When First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Portland was repairing and renovating its edicice a year ago, the use of the beautiful near-by Temple of Congregation Beth Israel was graciously tendered, and First Church held its services there for many weeks. On one occasion the past year, a Christian Scientist was invited to serve as a substitute soloist in a Methodist church, and in announcing the solo the pastor mentioned the fact that the soloist was a Christian Scientist, saying, "And I, too, am endeavoring to become a scientific Christian." He also expressed gratitude for the spiritual understanding which lay back of the soloist's work. During recent months, the Portland Council of Churches has been running large weekly advertisements in the Morning Oregonian containing short articles by local pastors on the community value of churches, accompanied each time by several cuts of church edifices of all denominations. It has been gratifying to note that pictures of Christian Science churches have been included. It has not been so very many years since we were looked upon as an outlaw denomination and hardly worthy of such recognition as that.
