Years ago, when I was a young girl living in New York, I was healed of a severe form of indigestion through the work of a Christian Science practitioner after being under the care of our family physician and on a strict diet for about a year without benefit. At that time I regarded Christian Science simply as another form of treatment, and did not look into its teachings, or study, or even read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I noticed during the time I was undergoing treatment that I felt uplifted and happier than I had felt before; but I had an idea that there was something queer about Christian Science, and I did not want to become a Christian Scientist.
However, some years ago, when I had a bad nervous breakdown, I again turned to Christian Science and again it healed me. It was not until I had undergone medical treatment for about two years, and had also taken a long sea voyage in the hope of regaining health, that I decided to ask for Christian Science treatment. At that time I was in a serious mental condition. The fear of insanity was constantly with me, and all sorts of other horrible fears. I shall never forget the love and patience shown me by the practitioner to whom I turned for help, nor can I ever be sufficiently grateful for her unfailing sympathy, encouragement, and support. My healing was not a quick one, but gradually the awful darkness lifted and the light came. During this trying time I constantly read Christian Science literature, and I am deeply grateful to Mrs. Eddy for providing all those channels for the truth, as they meant so much to me then.
I think I am most grateful that Christian Science gave me an understanding of God which satisfied my reason, and which I was able to offer to my young son with conviction—something I had not had before. The religion in which I had been brought up failed to satisfy me, and I felt that I could not teach my child what I did not believe myself. I am so thankful that my boy, who was then about twelve years old and away at school, accepted the teachings of Christian Science, and, when he was home for his holidays, attended the Sunday school. This glorious truth has been a wonderful help to him all through his school life, and he has often been able to prove for himself the healing and regenerating power of the ever present Christ. He is now at one of the big universities; and I am so grateful that he has the privilege of membership in the Christian Science Organization there.
