"If I be lifted up"

The thunder and the surge of anxious feet,
The busy hum and clamor of the day,
Heard in the restless noises of the street,
Grow dim and fade away.

"And I, if I be lifted up" — this thought
Has stemmed the tide and stilled the sudden fear;
Turning to God in the one way Christ taught
Has shown us God is here.

And we can pass by the unquiet ways
Of worldly men, untouched by stress or strife,
Because we have proved true that loving phrase,
"I am the way, . . . the life."

Strengthened by grace, uplifted far above
All evil and despair, our paths grow wide;
For he, the Master, taught us how to love,
No matter what betide.
