When about twenty years of age, I served for a time as the superintendent of a Sunday school of the Protestant Episcopal church, of which I was a member. Soon, however, I felt I was not well suited for this work, so requested that a successor be appointed. As time passed, I drifted farther and farther away from religion and gave practically no thought to God.
About five years ago, while in a hotel in Pau, France, I casually mentioned Christian Science to an acquaintance, saying, "I wish I could become a Christian Scientist; for they always appear to be so happy." The reply was made, "We are!" As a result of the conversation which ensued a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was daily lent me until my own copy arrived from Paris.
When I was but eight years of age I commenced smoking cigarettes and soon became an inveterate smoker. This I continued to be for forty years, until I had been reading Science and Health for three months. Formerly, whenever I awakened I would light a cigarette, but one morning about five years ago I had the accustomed cigarette in my mouth and a match ready to strike, when a "still small voice" said to me: You do not really want that cigarette, do you? You only think you want it. With that I replaced cigarette and match in their respective boxes. As soon as the morning meal was finished, habit demanded that I smoke; so again out came the cigarette. Instantly the question previously asked me was repeated, with the result that the cigarette was again put back in its box, this time to remain; for never since that moment have I had the slightest desire for tobacco in any form.
