In the issue of December 18 you published a news item under the heading, "Dean ... Attacks Faith-Healing Cult. Famous British Divine Pours Scorn on Fakirs." In the opening sentence which followed, direct reference was made to Christian Science; and the purpose of this letter is to correct certain false impressions. With due respect to the dean, it must be said that he does not speak authoritatively on the subject.

The healing of sin or of sickness through Christian Science, is not brought about in the manner suggested, namely, by "the fashionable tendency to dabble in the occult and supernatural," but is the result of prayer, or the correct spiritual understanding of God and His law, understanding based on Bible authority, and particularly on the teaching and example of Christ Jesus. The satisfactory results obtained are in accordance with the promise of Christ Jesus, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also;" and in obedience to his command to "preach the gospel" and "heal the sick."

Spiritual healing is to-day a recognized and established fact. For instance, at a convention of the Episcopal Church, held in Washington, District of Columbia, in 1928, a joint committee of bishops and deputies, including prominent medical doctors, reported in part that "Christian healing has passed beyond the stage of experiment and its value cannot be questioned;" also, "that throughout the Christian world the power in faith to produce results in the material as well as the spiritual world is no longer the hope of a few, but the belief of a rapidly increasing number ... vital faith in God, as revealed in Christ, is followed by results which are more sure, more lasting, and of a more evident spiritual character." Inability to appreciate such proof, or to show the signs of correct understanding which Christ Jesus said "shall follow them that believe," can never justify a condemnation of those who are making consistent and sincere efforts to understand, conform to, and obey the law of God. To say this is not to underestimate the efforts of others who are devoting time and attention to the alleviation of sin or sickness.
