The Wider View

ON visiting a beautiful country one is generally advised to go to the highest point to enjoy the view; and after climbing the hill one is rewarded by a wonderful panorama. Eyes are opened to that which is always present, although hidden from view on the lower level of the road. Just as one has to climb to gain the broader and larger external view, so one has to rise in consciousness before one's mental eyes are opened to the grandeur and wonder of spiritual creation. This vision can never be attained by remaining on the level of material thinking.

Seeking spiritual refreshment in contrast with the ceaseless toil and fret of mortal existence, our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, was wont to make his way into the surrounding hills, where in the large and broader view his thought was strengthened; and through prayer and meditation his vision of God's infinite spiritual creation, and of the ceaseless activity of Love's fruitful ideas, wiped out Adam-dream which hangs as a mist upon the lower level of mortal thought.

The sound of human voices and of cattle must have reached the Master's ears as he looked toward Jerusalem. The stories of human sufferings that had been brought to him during the day must have passed in chimeric flight through his thought; and his compassion was stirred, not because of any belief in the reality of evil, but because these suffering people believed in a lie and would not be comforted. "How often," he said, "would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!" They would not listen to the great truth which he was yearning to reveal to them; yet, realizing that the power of God must bring to pass the salvation of all mankind and that, as he once said, "There shall be one fold, and one shepherd," Jesus knew that all must one day climb the hill of spiritual realization and exchange the limitation of mortal thinking for the wider, purer view of creation. His spiritual sense must have caught a glimpse of the great company of God's children which no man can number; and he was alone with God and His ideas.
