The report of a sermon on "Mind Cure," as published in...
Daily Leader
The report of a sermon on "Mind Cure," as published in the issue of your paper of January 21, has been read with interest. The mention of Christian Science in the sermon, however, would lead your readers to believe that Christian Science is similar to other forms of "mind cure" mentioned, and that the healing work of Christian Science is accomplished through suggestion, and the action of the so-called human mind. I shall appreciate space in your paper for this letter of explanation and correction.
The preacher refers to what he terms the oft-repeated words of Christian Science, such as "God is good, and God is all. Therefore evil of any kind is only an error of mortal mind." Mrs. Eddy has made a similar statement more fully and clearly on page 38 of her book "No and Yes," where she says, "God is All, and He is good, and good is Spirit; hence there is no intelligent sin, evil mind or matter." That this statement is Scriptural is indicated in Deuteronomy, "The Lord he is God; there is none else beside him." Also in Matthew Christ Jesus implies that God is good, and in John 4:24 that He is Spirit (Standard Version); and in John 8:44 he refers to the devil, evil, as a liar, an unreality.
Christian Scientists do not use either passages from Mrs. Eddy's writings, or from the Bible, as formulas of suggestion, which are repeated over and over again to heal. Healing in Christian Science occurs through the realization of the truth contained in the Word of God. In the case of the passage quoted from Mrs. Eddy's book, "No and Yes," it is the absolute truth in this passage about God, Spirit, His allness and goodness, and the consequent unreality of evil, which heals whenever the truth expressed there is realized. This in brief explains the method of Christian Science healing. It is the spiritual truth about God and man and the universe, understood and applied to human experience, eliminating the errors of the mortal or "carnal" mind, as Paul has it. It is the true thoughts or ideas of the divine Mind, which is God, displacing the erroneous thoughts or concepts of the "carnal" mind.
