Sheffield Daily Telegraph

My attention has just been drawn to a statement about Mrs. Eddy contained in your issue of November 28, under the heading "Church Topics," which requires correction.

Your contributor, after speaking about the decline of the "older churches," makes disparaging remarks about Mrs. Eddy, a woman who some sixty years ago inaugurated a mighty religious reformation which revived in Christian worship the quickening touch of the Christ; a reformation which has been felt by every Christian denomination, and has influenced the universal mode of thinking; a reformation which is restoring to men their God-given freedom from bondage of every nature.

When your contributor says that her influence "is difficult to understand" he shows how little he knows about Mrs. Eddy and her work. The influence exerted is the influence of her message, and is due to its inherent truth. A remarkable feature is that while reading her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the messenger never intrudes upon the message, and after receiving the message one has a feeling of affection and reverence towards the messenger. There is a sacred depth in her writings that leads to the Christ, Truth; and to inspire to Christliness one surely must be inspired.
