Unable to attend school from my fifteenth to my nineteenth year,...
Unable to attend school from my fifteenth to my nineteenth year, because of illness, I was finally given only a few months longer to live by my physician. Bright's disease and other so-called incurable diseases caused me to abandon all hope. In a last effort to help me, my parents took me from my home in New York to California, where I grew rapidly worse. Here my mother heard of Christian Science through a stranger, and although I was incredulous about being helped, I agreed to let this new-found friend give me a Christian Science treatment, which she very lovingly did, and I was immediately healed. This treatment was given on a Friday night, and on Saturday morning I felt so strong and free that I was able to take a long ride on horseback, and I felt neither weariness, weakness, nor pain.
The following Monday, with the loving aid and encouragement of our Christian Science friend, I made special arrangements at a local academy to attempt to cover my four years' high school work in seven months. It was then February, and I desired to be prepared for college by the following October. Although previously an indifferent student, I succeeded in completing this four years' work in the allotted time, working about eighteen hours a day instead of resting eighteen hours a day as I had been obliged to do before my healing. During the first two months of this arduous work I gained twenty-three pounds in weight. The healing was complete, and I have never had a return of any of the so-called diseases or their symptoms. My college work was completed in the regular four-year period, although I transferred from a western university to a New England college after my first year. Christian Science alone made this possible.
Since that time Christian Science has met my every problem, not always so quickly, but as promptly as my thought has been receptive to the truth. An invaluable aid in understanding Christian Science has been class teaching by a consecrated and loyal teacher.
