Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication for the Year Ended September 30, 1929

Illinois.

From the evidence at hand it would appear that editors of daily and weekly newspapers published in Illinois are extremely friendly. Many have become boosters of our religion. Space cheerfully furnished for reports of Christian Science lectures and weekly excerpts from the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, has in 1929 exceeded that of other years. It would seem that our familiar educational newspaper feature "Good Thoughts for Good People," described in prior reports, has awakened renewed interest among readers. It is a service prized by many editors. Under the heading "One Never Can Tell," the editor of the Republican at Geneva, Illinois, has this to say of it: "It is often difficult for a newspaper publisher to know just what feature may please the readers. For the past three years the Republican has been printing 'Good Thoughts for Good People," on the editorial page. In our opinion, it was excellent material; we often wondered if it was appreciated. Owing to lack of space, this feature was omitted from two issues of the paper recently, and we were agreeably surprised at the number of subscribers who asked us why we had omitted 'Good Thoughts' and added: 'We read them every week, and hope you will print them regularly hereafter.' "

The weekly reports of the Christian Science Sunday services, furnished in mat, plate, or printed forms to over one hundred and twenty-five daily and weekly newspapers throughout Illinois, are bringing in part the gospel of Christian Science to readers where our religion needs to be better known. Newspapers in the larger cities using this service set their own type from our proof sheets.
