"Power to think and act rightly"

In "Pulpit and Press" (p. 3) Mrs. Eddy writes, "He [the Master] also said: 'The kingdom of God is within you.' " Then she says: "Know, then, that you possess sovereign power to think and act rightly, and that nothing can dispossess you of this heritage and trespass on Love. If you maintain this position, who or what can cause you to sin or suffer?" Our Leader is here dealing with a subject of great importance to mankind; and she does so in a manner altogether scientific.

' "The kingdom of God is within you"! What do these words of Christ Jesus imply? Christian Science shows that they may be taken as meaning that harmony is the heritage of man, since the real man reflects the perfect Mind, whom we call God, in perfectly harmonious consciousness. The material senses are continually seeking to suggest inharmony, continually seeking to have us believe that evil is real; that sin, sickness, and death are real. The apparent result is that many submit to a state of suffering and fear which is the very opposite of happy and harmonious.

Now, because the kingdom of God is within us, because the real, spiritual selfhood of each of us is the harmonious reflection of perfect Mind, we have the "power to think and act rightly." That is to say, we have the ability to know the truth, as opposed to error; to know good, instead of evil; to know life, not its opposite, death. However great may be the temptation to believe in error or evil as real, we have the power to reject it, since God's idea, man, is conscious only of good. Always must thought, however, be true to spiritual Truth, and to the truth about the real man. If thought steadfastly abide there, the lies of mortal mind, the so-called mind of the flesh, cannot disturb us.
