When I was a young child my father was wonderfully led to find a Christian Science Sentinel while traveling on a train in a northern state. From that time on we have grown in the understanding of Christian Science, until now we use it as our only means of help in every phase of our daily life.
While a child I never really studied Christian Science and never had the opportunity to attend Sunday school, but my mother was my constant guide and helper. During that time I was most lovingly cared for. During a very severe electric storm I had to herd cattle away from the fences so that they would not get struck. With my boy playmates I used to go through dangerous herds of cattle; and I went along the rivers where there were poisonous snakes—always unhurt and protected.
At the age of twelve I was forced to come into even closer touch with Christian Science. While playing with some children in a near-by city I fell about twenty feet from a tree, striking my left limb on a protruding root. While falling I repeated the line, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need," found on page 494 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. With that blessed thought I was reminded to raise up my arms, which I did. My left limb, upon striking the root, was broken between the knee and the hip. My mother was called and help was asked from a practitioner. Physicians were asked to set the limb. This they tried to do four times, but unsuccessfully. They then decided to operate and put a steel clamp on the bone. This was done, and after the ninth day severe blood poisoning set in. I notified my mother, and she took me home. When I left the hospital the doctors said that I would never walk another step in my life. After four months of deep study of Science and Health on my part, and with the help of my mother, my sister, a practitioner, and a dear friend, I was able to get out of bed. To-day I am a strong, healthy young man and can do any kind of work on the farm.
