Our Bible Lessons

It is possible that the Lesson-Sermons do not seem so very important to one who is just taking up the study of Christian Science, especially if his acquaintance with the Bible be limited to that obtained during his school days. Looking up the various passages in the Bible has a disturbing effect upon him, and it may seem to him that the study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," or the other works by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, and of the Christian Science periodicals, is much more purposeful.

This was the case with the writer of this article. True, she read the Lesson every morning, because she had been told this was necessary for her progress; but the reading was done only as a task which must be disposed of before one could return to the study of Mrs. Eddy's works. But this very important daily food could bring forth little good fruit as long as it was regarded as secondary.

Later, the question was put to her as to whether she would quality herself to teach in the Sunday school. This was the fulfillment of a silently cherished desire, and she was deeply thankful. Then began the preparation for this most important work, which naturally included the study of the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. Then also was it recognized what a rich treasure lies hidden in them, and thenceforward they formed the major part of daily study. How often their contents seem to be intended just for us! Each one takes from them what is suited to his needs. Even if certain Bible passages are repeated, fresh thoughts constantly come as a result of more earnest study. If, however, one treats the familiar passage as one already known, then the illumination is apt to be lost. But how one rejoices when thought catches a fresh point of view!
