In the summer of 1902, I found the Christian Science...
In the summer of 1902, I found the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in the home where I was visiting, and began to read it. I had never heard of Christian Science, but the title of the book and the name of the first chapter, which in that edition was "Science, Theology, Medicine," made an immediate appeal to me. As I read, I stopped and rejoiced that I had found that for which I had so earnestly prayed, the revelation of divine law.
I found it interesting, and that evening realized I had been healed of a terror that had grown to be almost constantly in my thought, a nervous, haunting terror of an unseen evil presence: I felt safe. Next morning I went eagerly to the book. I told my relatives I was not going back to the doctor, and would not continue taking the medicine which I had. I ate things I had been afraid to eat. My life was changed, and I knew it. Those around me could see the improvement and did not oppose me.
It seemed to me that I understood what I was reading, and my thought dwelt a great deal upon the ever-presence of God; but as time went on I read less and less, thinking I must give attention to other things. Then I began to have trouble, the way was not always clear, and I began to wish I might have help from a Christian Scientist. I could not find anyone interested in Christian Science, and so I passed through an experience of learning through suffering until I grasped how to apply Science. I changed my work in order to live in a city where I could attend a Christian Science church, and had help from a practitioner; but finally I came to see that I must study this truth daily in order to be able to use it. Later, I changed my work again and joined a branch church and The Mother Church and had class instruction.
