[Written for the Sentinel]

Steadfast

As some great rock upon a rugged coast
By breakers clutched and lashed from eve to morn,
Submerged ofttimes beneath the angry waves,
Stands firmly through the violence of the storm,
And in the dawn, unshaken and unmoved,
Lifts its high peak toward the morning sky
Into the rosy flush of newborn day
To shimmer, golden, in the rising sun;

So shall our steadfast faith in Thee, O God,
Through strain and trial rooted deep and sure,
Upon Thy fixed, unchanging law and Word,
Foundation based on Principle divine,
Declare the impotence of wind and wave,
The powerless surge of error's angry foam,
And in the dawn of Thy eternal day
Rise to the glorious radiance of Thy love.
